"Reading Woman" by Sara Balbin
NCBC TRAVELING AWARD

At the 2009 Northwoods Children’s Books Conference, author and illustrator Debra Frasier kindly donated to the Conference the raffled prize of sculptor Sara Balbin’s metal-and-rock sculpture of a human reading a book from which a dragonfly of thought and inspiration is flying.

This sculpture would be ideal on display in a library or classroom. How might it find its way to you?

If your library or classroom devises a bulletin board or showcase about one of this year’s faculty members (see below) or their books, send us photos and a short description of your display. We will select one winner from the entries to display the Sara Balbin sculpture for one year, returning it to the NCBC the following year so another individual or organization can cherish it the next year.

This sculpture is heavy and it stands about 16 inches tall, so if you’re arriving at the conference by airplane, you’ll probably want to forego entering, but we encourage everyone else to do so.

We will display all photos on a kiosk at the Conference so you can see the ideas others have employed. We’ll also post them on our NCBC website for inspiration. An article about the winning entry will be featured in Children’s Literature Network’s online magazine. What a wonderful way to share your work!

The authors and illustrators who are faculty members this year are:

Candace Fleming
Lee Ann Landstrom
Marsha Qualey
Eric Rohmann
Laura Purdie Salas
Karen I. Shragg
Anita Silvey

You might begin your research on the Children’s Literature Network site, under Authors & Illustrators, with links provided to the authors’ websites.
