Forest Lab Intern Program:
Lake Science 101

Lakes are scattered throughout northern Wisconsin and play an essential role in our lives and as an ecosystem. What do lakes provide? Why are they so important? How can they be protected? Youth ages 12-18 are invited to attend programs at the Northwest Wisconsin Lakes Conference with the Museum staff. Meet at the Cable Natural History Museum at 9:30 a.m. and return 5:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Space is limited. Please register by calling 715-798-3890 by noon on June 19.

Forest Lab Intern Program:
Birding Basics

It's a bird. It's a plane. No…it's a flying Museum naturalist. Youth ages 12-18 are encouraged to migrate to the Cable Natural History Museum to take flight on this program about the basics of birding. Learn how to use binoculars, see and identify the most common birds living in our area, and discover the natural history of birds. Meet at the Cable Natural History Museum at 10:00 a.m. and return by Noon. Bring binoculars. Space is limited. Please register by noon on June 26 by calling 715-798-3890. Donations accepted.

Forest Lab Intern Program: Electro-shocking Science

Just how do scientists study fish in our area lakes and rivers? Frank Pratt, Fisheries Biologist from the Wisconsin DNR will teach us about a research method called electro-shocking used to survey fish populations. Be prepared to get wet as participants also learn about other techniques researchers use to test the water quality of waterways. Young adults ages 12-18 can meet at the Cable Natural History Museum at 1:00 p.m. and return by 3:30 p.m. Space is limited. Please register by noon on July 15 by calling 715-798-3890. Forest Lab Intern Program: Tracking Down Turtles

Hike through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest to learn more about the reptiles and amphibians that live in our lakes, rivers, forests, and backyards. Investigate the habitats of these species, capture and trap specimens, and discuss their importance in our world. Young adults ages 12-18 can meet at the Cable Natural History Museum at 8:00 a.m. and return by 4:00 p.m. Space is limited. Please register by noon on July 24 by calling 715-798-3890. August 1, Friday
Forest Lab Intern Program: Nature Art

Artists have been inspired by the natural world for thousands of generations. Learn more about the art of scientific illustration, draw and observe natural specimens, and participate in a group and individual art project. Youth ages 12-18 should meet at the Cable Natural History Museum. Program hours are 10:00 a.m. to noon. Please register by noon on July 31 by calling 715-798-3890. Donations accepted.

August 8, Friday
Forest Lab Intern Program: Inspecting Aliens

You may not know it, but there are aliens among us…and no they are not from another planet. However, these aliens are from another country and they are what we call an invasive species. These plants and animals can have a huge impact on the survival of our local species and ecosystems. Join a Cable Natural History Museum naturalist to learn more about the invasive species that have infiltrated our region and participate in a service project to rid our area lakes and land of these species. Youth ages 12-18 are being recruited to help destroy these aliens. Help us in our mission by meeting at the Museum at 10:00 a.m. and return by 4:00 p.m. Space is limited. Please register by noon on August 7 by calling 715-798-3890.

August 15, Friday
Forest Lab Intern Program: Collection Capers

Capture, collect, and catch. These words are often associated with Museums. Find out why Museums gather specimens and how they preserve them for use in their collections. Learn about the techniques of preservation, observe Museum staff prepare a study skin, and help catch insects for conservation. The program will be held at the Cable Natural History Museum for youth ages 12-18 from 10:00 a.m. - Noon. Space is limited. Please register by noon on August 14 by calling 715-798-3890. Donations accepted.
