Junior Duck Stamp: Traveling Exhibition at the Cable Natural History Museum
The Junior Duck Stamp exhibit is the culmination of a wetlands and waterfowl conservation program that is taught in schools throughout the nation. Students from around the United States submit drawings and paintings of North American waterfowl to compete in both state and national contests. This exhibit is a selection of the "Best of Show" pictures from Wisconsin created by students from kindergarten through high school. Donations accepted. Nature Lab: White-tailed Deer
Join Sam Moore, a retired wildlife biologist, to discover the wonders of the white-tailed deer. Train yourself to age a white-tailed deer by investigating its jaw; feel the weight of an antler; and see an assortment of taxidermy mounts. Stop by the Cable Natural History Museum any time from 1:00-4:00 p.m. to learn about this common creature of the north woods. Donations accepted. Forest Lab Intern Program: Electro-shocking Science
How do scientists study fish in our area lakes and rivers? Join the fish crew of the Wisconsin DNR to learn about a research method called electro-shocking. Be prepared to get wet as participants also learn about other techniques researchers use to test water quality. Young adults ages 12-18 can meet at the Cable Natural History Museum at 1:00 p.m. and return by 4:00 p.m. Space is limited. Registration is required. Donations accepted. Forest Lab Intern Program: Tracking Down Reptiles and Amphibians
Hike through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest with herpetologist, Ed Moll, to learn about the reptiles and amphibians that live in our lakes, rivers, and forests. Investigate the habitats of these species, capture and trap specimens, and discuss their importance in our world. Young adults ages 14-18 can meet at the Cable Natural History Museum at 8:00 a.m. and will return by 4:00 p.m. Space is limited. Registration is required. Donations accepted. Make a Splash! Read! A Tom Pease Performance
Get ready to sing and laugh! Join the Forest Lodge Library as they wrap up their "Make A Splash! Read!" summer program with a special performance by Tom Pease. Meet outside on the educational campus of the Forest Lodge Library and the Cable Natural History Museum at 10:30 a.m. Tom has been entertaining kids and their families for over 25 years and he's bound to make waves on this return trip to the area. His programs are "participatory" and celebrate themes such as reading, nature, families, and the joy of laughter and movement. Grab a lawn chair or a blanket and surf on over! Unlocking the Uhrenholdt Forest
Have you ever wondered about the history and legacy of the Uhrenholdt forest? Join Gordy Christians, a nursery superintendent and property manager for the Wisconsin DNR - Dept. of Forestry, on a hike to unlock the secrets of the Uhrenholdt forest in Sawyer County. Gordy will discuss the importance and purpose of state demonstration forests and the conservation methods used to manage them. Meet at the Cable Natural History Museum at 10:00 a.m. to carpool to the forest and return by Noon. Dress accordingly. Registration required. "An Evening of Woodland Enchantment" - Benefit Auction and Gourmet Buffet
The Museum's Annual Benefit Auction and Gourmet Buffet will be held this summer at the home of Pete and Colleen McIntyre. Archeology
Archeology is fun, but serious and hard work! Digging, discovery and the determination of prehistory is what archeology is all about. Participants will be introduced to the basic methods and techniques of field archeology, laboratory procedures for the identification and interpretation of artifact assemblages, and the preservation and presentation of artifacts as historical data.
