Hafla - A gypsy celebration, a jump-start for the best weekend experience in Northern Wisconsin! We'll have all kinds of fun and festive activities to choose from, including hair braiding, drumming and dancing that you can learn, Poi demos and instruction, costume tips and ideas, Gypsy Bazaar tables with wares for sale!
"Tribal Spirits of the Sun" are a diverse group of people who have joined fortuitously through the love of drum and dance. This "Gypsy Tribe" of 13 members are fascinated by world music, intricate costume design, and the self confidence and joy that drumming and dancing can give to us all.

Warm Up & Intro to Belly Dancing |

Joan has been belly dancing since she first sent away for Ozel's #2 record set almost 30 years ago in Alaskan bush. Joan spreads the joy of belly dance by teaching in Hayward, Spooner and Rice Lake.
When not dancing, Joan can be found outdoors gathering wild edibles or photographing wildflowers in our little corner of paradise.
Joan has a BFA in Art from UW - Superior and teaches Art at HACIL - Hayward's charter school. She also subs in Hayward Schools and works as a Park Ranger on the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway seasonally.

Aliyah Sahar is a professional belly dance instructor, performer and choreographer. She is known for her highly energetic and engaging performances that incorporate dynamic drum solos, super shimmies, and fused styles of dance. Aliyah Sahar will be presenting the following two workshops:
Dynamic Drum Solos!! In this session learn how to find the drum solo for you, to "map it out", and how to use your dance space and reach your audience! Aliyah will teach you show-stopping accents, shimmies, locks, pops and much more!

Tribal Hair & Makeup 101 - Amy Danielson |

Amy Danielson, aka 'Raven' has been involved in tribal fusion belly dance for four years. She's a member of Tribal Spirits of the Sun and owner of The Gypsy Kiss. Amy's style is peppered with the flavors of Vaudeville, Art Nouveau, Steampunk and Boxcar Fusion. Amy will offer the following workshop:
"Tribal Hair and Makeup 101" - Take a couple of tribal hairdos, a tutorial for how to make yarn falls, some how-tos for placing hair ornaments, and tribal dots and lip options step by step, and you've got a really giggle class. Amy will be giving hands on attention to anyone who needs help, and will offer either a small hairflower free with the class, or a $3 discount on any hair ornament she has for sale at The Gypsy Kiss table in the Souk.

Jenn Ramautar of Tribal Spirits of the Sun is a very talented and creative young woman. Her style is unique and one of a kind. She will be offering the following workshop:
"Gypsy Thrift" - Tribal Geared Gadgets - Learn innovative ideas on how to "tribalize" your gypsy attire. From utilizing inexpensive metal washers to creating wonders from thrift store garb, ideas galore are shared in this forum. Instructor Jenn Ramautar will show us how to create beautiful one of a kind pieces you will always treasure! Be unique - let your costuming reflect you. Please bring your own base, whether bra or belt, t-shirt or hip scarf. Add your own keepsakes, garage sale jewelry/belt finds, or personal hodge podge of collectibles, and let the creativity begin! Additional trinkets will be for sale.

Tim O'Keefe is an award winning percussionist/multi instrumentalist whose professional career spans over thirty years. His background includes traditional North American, Rock, Blues, Rhythm and Blues, many jazz styles and an assortment of other world music styles. Tim will be presenting the following workshop and participating in performances throughout the weekend.
Drums and Rhythms, from the Atlantic to the Gulf! This class will focus on rhythms from west and north Africa across the middle east to the Persian Gulf. Some common roots will be explored and some interesting poly rhythmic Fusion will be tasted with a little bit of Brazil thrown in. All drums welcome. |
Rak'in "Raks al Assaya"!!! - Aliyah Sahar |
2:30pm – 4:30pm
Rak'in "Raks al Assaya"!! Also known as the Egyptian Cane Dance, this folkloric dance comes from Said, a region of upper Egypt. Prop dances are a fun change of pace! Ral'in "Raks al Assaya is a coquettish parody of the men's martial arts stick dance, tah'tyb. This workshop will cover basic to intermediate techniques with sassy, flirtatious, and fun moves, both traditional and contemporary. Please bring a cane if you have one.

Dan and Tanna Worrell have been drumming with Tribal Spirits of the Sun for 4 years. They are both "HealthRhythms" facilitators and have hosted a community drum circle for several years.
Barbara "Arya" Luepke has been dancing and performing for over twelve years. Her experience in dancing and drumming is extensive. She enjoys creating unique choreographies and rhythms influenced by the blending of cultural flavors.
Barbara, Dan and Tanna will be presenting the following workshop:
"Tribal Formation Rhythm and Dance" - Strengthen your confidence and develop your own dance and drum techniques by exploring the Art of Improvisation. In this class we will begin on the drum, learning basic, simple rhythms which will give you a jump-start in finding your "own" rhythms. Then, you will playfully discover how to use dance movement to express your individual style. The "Tribal Formation Dance" gives opportunity for dancers to move in sisterly unity as well as providing a showcase for each personality. |
